Fundraising info

Tuesday, May17th

Today I mainly focused on just trying to get more information about nonprofit fundraising, but I'm not having that great of luck.  I just want to get more info for my mentor meeting tomorrow.

Money problems

Monday, May 16th

So, the people that said they were doing the fundraiser for me seem to be having some problems with it.  It is as if nobody who tells them that they will donate will donate.  This is extremely frustrating.  I really need all of the money in no more than a week!!!!  I hope everyone can get it done in time.

YAY!!!

Saturday, May 14th and Sunday, May 15th

Well crossroads got back to me and it looks like I will be funding a trip for their preteen promise! I am extremely excited about this especially since Deirdre said that I might get to go on the trip with them and meet all of the girls.  I think that would be an amazing opportunity. I can't wait!

Getting more kids to help!

Friday. May 13th

Well, today is Friday the 13th, but I seem to be having good luck instead of bad luck.  Mrs. Apice sold the cupcakes for me.  I was also able to get like 4 or 5 more students to do the fundraiser so that will bring in some more money.  I e-mailed crossroads about my fundraising efforts so hopefully they will get back to me soon.

Of course!

Thursday, May 12th

Ofcourse, my priest just got back to me today. . . . it's a little late though.
I'm not sure what I'm going to say to him. . . . I might just end up doing the diaper drive there still, it just won't be in time for my project presentation.

Mentor Meeting

Wednesday, May 11th

This morning I had my mentor meeting with Mr. Campbell.  We discussed what I have been doing so far.  I brought up the idea about asking future NHS kids to fundraise and I think that will help me distribute these 25 scratchcards.
I'm about to e-mail the people from crossroads and tell them about my fundraising efforts and have them give me a wishlist of what they need/want for their programs.
Oh, and myp riest still has not gotten back to me :/

Fundraising!

Tuesday, May 10th

So I started handing out the scratch card fundraisers to people in NHS. Hopefully they will be able to raise $100 each within 2 weeks or so. . .
After school I checked with Mrs. Apice how many orders for cupcakes she got was and it was around 15 and I got around 25 so on Thursday we are going to bake 4 dozen cupcakes to be handed out Friday.  That will bring in about another $80 or more.  With that, the total amount of money raised from cupcakes is going to be over $350!!!
Monday, May 9th

So after all those trials and tribulations with the scratchcards being sent to the wrong address and such, they finally arrived tonight.  They look pretty good and I'm excited to finally get this part of my project rolling. I also e-mailed my priest again so hopefully he will get back to me soon.  If not then I might have to call him if I can get his number or I will just give up on that aspect of my project.

Happy Mother's Day

Sunday, May 8th

It just hit me! My project presentation is in less than 3 weeks!!!!!! ahhhhhhh. . . . I still have so much to do though :./

I really need to start working on my powerpoint, but it seems so difficult to just start it, especially since I don't have much time at home because of everything that is going on.

Minor difficulties

Saturday, May 7th

Today I went sky diving!!!! With all that excitement I didn't really work on much for my project.  I'm currently trying to sort out the shipment of my scratch cards though.  The company sent them to the wrong address.  Oh, and Father Z. hasn't e-mailed me back which kinda makes me mad.  I need to call him, but I don't have his number :/
Friday, May 6th

Well, the last of the cupcakes were sold!!! Today and monday we are taking orders for cupcakes for thursday or friday.  I want to reach at least $300 total for this whole cupcake thing.  I think I can do it. Wish me luck!!!!

Cupcake sale!

Thursday, May 5th

Today after school was the cupcake sale. . . It was crazy! I was out there by myself and the cupcakes were selling like crasy.  As soon as someone saw their friend with one, then they wanted one.  Within no more than 20 minutes over 100 cupcakes were gone and only about 30 were left.  Since there weren't any kids really in the hallways anymore I packed up and counted the money.  The amount I had raised was $223 which included a few donations.  Tomorrow Mrs. Apice is going to sell the remaining cupcakes in her classes which should bring in around another $60.

Cupcakes are coming. . . .

Wednesday, May 4th

This morning I made sure I had all 86 cupcakes with me and I went and gave them to Mrs. Apice.  She and her students will be icing and decorating them for me.  I also put up all of the flyers around the school during 3rd period.  It took a while but it was worth it.  Throughout the day I could hear people commenting on the cupcake sale and they sounded pretty excited about it which got me even more excited. . . Tomorrow the cupcakes will be getting sold!

First period I finally met up with Mr. Campbell for our way past due meeting.  We just discussed some things and the apprentice at our school might possibly help me out with fundraising.

Busy, Busy, Busy

Tuesday, May 3rd

So yesterday after school I actually got quite a bit done.  I was pretty proud of myself, in fact.  The main things I did were ordering the scratcher cards and I emailed my prist about the diaper drive.

Today I made up flyers for the cupcake sale and photocopied them. Tomorrow morning I'm going to go around the school and hang them up. Also, In preparation for the cupcake sale I baked over 80 cupcakes! Let's just say the kitchen wasa complete mess and I had to clean it all up.  Figuring out a way to transport the cupcakes wasa bit difficult as well, but I justput them in bags since they were icing them at school.

Cupcake sale

Monday, May 2nd

Today Mrs. Apice found me in study hall again.  Basically her supervisor told her that I should just be the one involved with making the signs and everything like that.  Also, she wants me to go talk to the lunch ladies and see if we can purchase these containers for the sale.
I'm either just going to make flyers at my house or I'm going to do a couple big posters with the help of my friend who is in graphics.  First, i need to decide what day after school to sell these cupcakes.

Regrets. . .

Saturday, April 30th and May 1st

So this weekend all I could think about was how I am really wishing I hadn't chosen this wise project.  It's too late now though :/  I've lost all interest in it .  I really don't knowwhat to do now.  Hopefully, everything will just be over soon.

School?!?!

Friday, April 29th

Today in school was pointless. Noone was here and aI didn't want to be here!  I';m so done with school. I'm so done with everything. . .  I can't wait until everything is done with.

Mrs. Sardo said I needed to go see my mentor, Mr. Campbell about setting up a date for a mentor meeting.  I feel extremely bad that we haven't had one in ages.  It seems like there is never a time for one :/  I really need to have one soon though.

Cleaning

Thursday, April 28th

Today I just cleaned all day again! :/ It was pretty boring.  The realtor is coming tomorrow to take a look at our house so it was pertinent that I assisted my mom with getting the house ready.  No progress was made with my project.

Picnic

Wednesday, April 27th

Today my sister left this morning.  Later in the afternoon my boyfriend and I decided to go on a picnic.  We went to a lake, had a cute little picnic, and went on a mini hike.  Overall, the day was quite enjoyable :)

Last Day with my sister

Tuesday, April 26th

Today is the last day my sister is here and she is leaving tomorrow morning.  Therefore, I made sure I soent the day with her. We went shopping and as a family we all went to go play minigolf in the afternoon. We all really enjoyed the day.

Birthday

Monday, April 25th

Yesterday was my birthday!!!! Yay! I'm finally 18!!!!
I got some pretty good gifts, but the best one was skydiving.  Some time soon my dad is taking me skydiving :)
also, this means that hopefully the crossroads people will finally work with me again.

Spring Break!

Saturday, April 23rd and Sunday April 24th

For easter we had some friends come from virginia and spend the weekend with us.  We all had agreat time!  I've been busy entertaining so I didn't have any time to work on anything for WISE.

Spring Break!

Friday, April 22nd

Spring Break started today!  One of my birthday surprises/ presents was my sister coming home! I was so shocked when my mom told me to close my eyes and all of a sudden my sister came out of nowhere and jumped on my lap! this was a good beginning to a great spring break and birthday weekend.

Senior skip day

Thursday, April 21st

Today was supposedly senior skip day so I didn't go to school. I've been so stressed out that I decided to take this day to just relax and enjoy myself. It worked!

Senior Trip

Monday, April 18th
Tuesday, April 19th
Wednesday, April 20th

Senior trip was going on during these days. . . .

Weekend

Saturday, April 16th and Sunday, April 17th

Well this weekend was jammed pack with house stuff. We are trying to sell our house before we move to arkansas so all I did was clean house, reorganize things, and get rid of junk.  I had no time whatsoever to work on anyhting else really.

URRGGHHHH!

Friday, April 15th

Okay, so i'm still really upset about the whole crossroads thing because I don't turn 18 until the 24th.  This means I can't do anything with them for at least another week.  This is a huge disappointment and set back.  I just don't know what to do right now.

E-mail

Thursday, April 14th

Alright, so I finally heard back from one of the crossroads people.  He basically said that they can't do anything with me until I turn 18.  That just pisses me off because it seems like they just waited forever to tell me this. I could have been focusing on something else with them! ugh!

Apice

Wednesday, April 13th

Today Mrs. Apice found me in my study hall.  She said she got the fundraiser approved! Her class is going to be making cupcakes and selling them.  The proceeds with go towards my overall fundraising! Finally, some more progress is being made!

Housing

Tuesday, April 12th 2011

Today I got to register for housing for UA! I'm so excited. I found out who my roommate was and everything.  As for my project, I didn't do anything with it.

Overwhelmed and frustrated

Monday, April 11th 2011

At this moment in time i am just extremely overwhelmed and frustrated with everything going on around me.  Between this project, other school stuff, and college stuff I just feel like nothing is progressing and I will be stuck in school forever.

Wednesday, April 20, 2011

Still no e-mail!!!!

Saturday, April 9th and Sunday, April 10th

Okay, so now I'm really mad.  I still have not heard anything from these people! I don't want to think that I'm pestering them.  Tomorrow if I still haven't heard anything from them than I am going to e-mail them again.  Hopefully they will reply.

No news

Friday, April 8th

Alright, so I haven't recieved any e-mail from the crossroads people today.  It kind of makes me mad because I need them to tell me what the plan is.  I understand that they are probably busy, but still, it's frustrating.

Not much

Thursday, April 7th

Today I didn't really do much.  I'm just waiting for the e-mail to come back so I can know what the plan is.

Letdown. . .

Wednesday. April 6th

Soooo the NHS meeting was today and it didn't exactly go as I had planned.  Not as many peopl signed up to do the fundraiser which is very disappointing.  I just really want to raise a lot of money, but it doesn't seem like they are really willing to help.  Oh well, I guess I will just order these scratchcards and hope for the best.

NHS meeting tomorrow

Tuesday, April 6th

Tomorrow is the next NHS meeting and I'm going to tell everyone about the scratchers cards and hopefully get a decent amount of people to sign up for them.  I already made a sign up sheet and I have examples ready so that everyone can understand how to do it.

Reply!

Monday, April 4th

I received a message baqck today thanking me for keeping in touch and telling me that they were going to make up a schedule for when we can work together.  Also, they told me that the schedule should be ready by thursday or friday.  I'm really excited for this because it means that my project really offically gets started for the hands on aspect of it.

Schedule

Saturday, April 2nd and Sunday, April 3rd

At my last meeting with the crossroads people, they told me to shoot them an e-mail with when I was available to work with them and volunteer.  On saturday I just consulted with my mom and figured out all of the days I had something going on and when I was free.  Then, today I sat down and wrote them an e-mail informing them the times I'm available.

Apice

Friday, April 1st

April Fool's Day!!! Anyways, today I decided I would go talk to Mrs. Apice about the cupcake fundraiser they did last year and if they were doing it again this year.  She didn't know if they were going to do it or not, so I asked that if they were to do it that the proceeds could go to my charity.  She seemed very open to the idea and that I just needed to check in with her later and she could give me a definite answer.

Wigley

Thursday, March 31st

Today I had a meeting with Wigley and it was extremely frustrating. . . . I felt like I didn;t really get anything out of it and that we weren't on the same page.  I kept on trying to ask him what I'm allowed to do and not allowed to do, but he never fully answered my questions.  Basically, he told me to come up with a fundraiser and to then see if he could approve it, so that's what I'm going to do.

Mentor Meeting

Wednesday, March 30th

Today was my mentor metting with Mr. Campbell. . . . finally.  I felt like it went pretty well and I was able to let him know what all was going on.  He gave me some good ideas for fundraisers and I felt like we went on a wild goose chase throughout the period to talk to different teachers.  Now I need to set up a meeting with Wigley and see what I can do at the school for fundraising.

Mentor meeting tomorrow

Tuesday, March 29th

Tomorrow is my mentor meeting! I haven't been to one in a while because of class scheduling. . . I feel really bad about it and I'm pretty frustrated because my teachers told me I would be able to leave on Wednesdays, but that hasn't been the case.  Tomorrow I have a lot to update Mr. Campbell on. . . .

Tuesday, April 19, 2011

Plans for this week

Monday, March 28th

Here are my plans for this week.

1) MENTOR MEETING!!!!
2) Talk to Wigley about fundraising in the school
3) Talk to Apice about having a cupcake fundraiser
4) GET ORGANIZED!!!! (. . . . again)

Unorganized

Saturday March 26th and Sunday, March 27th

I realized these past two days that all of my organization went out the door.  My binder I made for my WISE project is a total mess! :/ I need help!  urgggh, I just wish I could keep things nice and tidy.  Maybe I will work on reorganizing my binder again this week.

Businesses?

Friday, March 25th

So, I was thinking about other ways I could get some money and fundraise today.  I figured that many businesses tend to donate money to charities.  Maybe if I write to some and visit them, then I can get some more money for the crossroads program!  I just want to raise as much money as possible so I can make a huge difference.

Multicultural Day

Thursday, March 24th

Today was Multicultural day.  After getting up at 5 am to make sure all the food was ready and my poster was ready, I headed off to school.  I feel like it was a success and many people liked our food.  Thank god this is over with! I just want to relax now because I am so exhausted. . .

Still Stressed

Wednesday, March 23rd

UGHHHH!!! I feel like I'm the only one doing any work for my stupid group for multicultural day. It's really making me mad.  I have spent alllllllllllll day after school cooking mexican food. I just can't wait until all of this is over with.

Stressed!

Tuesday, March 22nd

Mulyicultural day is this thursday and I'm super stressed out about that right now.  I dont really have any time to think about my WISE project because of multicultural day.  After Thursday I should get back to working on my WISE project.

Youth Group

Monday, March 21st

Yesterday, I talked to some people in my youth group about my diaper drive idea.  They thought that it was a good idea.  In fact, I found out that there have been drives like that at the church before.  One of the things they had done before was called a baby shower for Jesus where people donated anything and everything for babies.  I might do this instead of just a diaper drive.

Diaper Drive

Sunday, March 20th

One of the programs for crossroads is for pregnant teens.  I decided that this would be a great program to donate to.  Deirdre told me that people have done diaper drives in the past and that they have been successful, so I figured i would do one as well.  My church is great about donations so I think I'm going to talk to my priest and see if I can do one at our church.

Lost

Saturday, March 19th

Yesterday was my meeting.  I don't have much time to journal right now so I will just give a quick synopsis what happened before the meeting.  I got lost.  The building has no sign or anything to let me know that that is for the crossroads program.  I pretty much circled the same place like 5 times and its in a pretty sketchy area.  Fianlly, I decided to just park and I walked up to the building that I thought it was, but the door was locked.  Eventually I called their phone number and it turns out I was on the porch and so they came downstairs and let me in.

Meeting in Mt. Holly

Friday, March 18th

Today is my meeting in Mt. Holly with other people from the crossroads program. Here are some questions I want to ask them:

1) What are your programs that you run?
2) How many kids are in each program?
3) What do you need help with?
4) What am I allowed to do to help?
5) How do teens hear about your programs/become involved with them?

Monday, April 18, 2011

Meeting tomorrow!

Thursday, March 17th

Yay! My meeting with the other crossroads people is tomorrow! I'm excited to make some more progress with this program.  Tomorrow we don't have school, so I will compile a list of questions to ask them, just like I did with Deirdre. Today, I am just going to brainstorm some in my head.

Continuing. . .

Wednesday, March 16th

Here are some more things I thought of that would be my words of wisdom/advice that I would want my children to know.  A few of these have to deal with my WISE project since it is volunteering.

1) Find a way to help someone else, it makes you feel better.
2) Never hold a grudge.  It only hurts you.
3) Never turn a blind eye to someone in need.
4) Life isn't forever, so enjoy it while you can!

Words of Wisdom

Tuesday, March 15th

The Last Lecture is all about telling others your last words of wisdom.  Whatever you want to tell people or think people should know is what you lecture about.  In class we talked about what our words of wisdom would be.
I've compiled a list of a few below.

1) Never take yourself to seriously.
2) Always try to make someone smile each day.
3) No matter what, you've made an impact on someone so make sure it is a good one.
4) Appreciate your parents, you don't realize how much they have sacrificed for you.

Skratchers

Monday, March 14th

Today I found online these things called skratchers.  Each scratch card raises $100 which is great and they seem easy to do.  Basically the scratchcard has 50 circles that have hidden amounts underneath.  All you do is go up to someone and ask for them to donate to your cause and ask for them to scratch off two of the circles.  Whatever amounts are underneath is what that person donates and then they get a coupon card.  No matter what, noone will have to donate more than $6.

Fundraising

Saturday, March 12th and Sunday, March 13th

This weekend I spent looking up different fundraisers that NHS could help me with.  I haven't really found anything that seems possible to do with my time constraints.  Some of the things I have found that are possible to do are really overdone such as bakesales.  I'm going to talk to other people in school and brainstorm some ideas with them.

Nothing to do. . .

Friday, March 11th

I feel like I have nothing to do really right now.  All I'm waiting for is to meet with these other people from crossroads.  It's kind of like a dead end for me :/   I need to find something to work on between now and next Friday when I meet with the other crossroads people.

Correction!

Thursday, March 10th

I would just like to make one correction from my previous posts about my meeting with Deirdre.  I will not be meeting with her again.  Instead she has me meeting with someone else from the program in Mt. Holly.  She feels that they will be able to put me to work and I can directly benefit their specidfic programs within Crossroads.

NHS meeting

Wednesday, March 9th

Today I was finally able to talk to all of the NHS members together at the meeting.  I was put in the schedule and was the last person to speak.  I basically just gave them the run down and told them that more information was to come.  Everyone seemed pretty welcoming to the idea of helping me out.

Organization

Tuesday, March 8th

In my freetime today I made it a priority to get organized finally! I found one of my old binders and i got dividers and set it all up.  One section is for everything I get in class, another is for random notes, another is for the crossroads program, and a another is for fundraising.  Hopefully, I will be able to keep everything organized, but with my ADD that seems like an impossible task.  I have never been able to keep anything organized.

The Last Lecture

Monday, March 7th

In class we are reading the last lecture.  I've read the first chapter so far and it seems like it will be a prett inspiring book and an easy read.  Hopefully, this will be one of the rare books that I actually enjoy reading for school.  I feel like I will learn from what this man has written.

Plans for this week

Sunday, March 6th

Today I didn't really accomplish anything related to my WISE project.  I pretty much just did my normal routine. . . Gym, Tan, Lanudry, along with some grocery shopping.
Since my meeting with Deirdre I can't meet with her until next friday, not this friday since she will be away.
Here is my plan for this week. . .
1) Decide what fundraising I'm going to do
2) Get organized
3) Talk to NHS members
4) keep in touch with Deirdre

Great Meeting!

Saturday, March 5th

Yesterday's meeting was great! I think we accomplished a lot.  Deirdre was extremely nice and helpful.  She basically wants to make sure that I am able to complete me project in helping them and that they help me help them.  She did say that their may be some complications since I'm not 18 yet . . . :/
I'll blog my notes from my meeting sometime later :)

Questions, Questions, and more Questions

Friday, March 4th

Today is my meeting with Deirdre.  I made sure I looked presentable this morning when I left for school since the meeting is right after school. (this means I actually put make-up on :p )  I wore a nice pair of jeans (without any holes) and a "dressier" shirt.

Anyways. . . . I need some questions for the meeting later today.
Here is a list of some:
-What is the purpose of crossroads?
-What are all of the programs?
-How do you help homeless teens?
-How can I help?
-What am I allowed to do?
-What am I prohibited from doing?

More Preparation

Thursday, March 3rd

Tomorrow is my meeting with Deirdre (the lady from crossroads).  I'm pretty anxious/excited about this.  Hopefully everything will go well and we can come up with a plan together to jumpstart my project.  I need to think up some questions to ask her so I will be prepared and I will accomplish everything I want to accomplish in the meeting.

No Show

Wednesday, March 2nd

Well, today was supposed to be the NHS meeting, however, Mr. Newman was a "no show".  He didn't come to school today because he was sick, so the meeting will be postponed until next week.  Maybe this extra week will allow me to figure out what exactly I will be doing for the fundraiser so I can explain to all the members what my idea is.

Preparing

Tuesday, March 1st

Tomorrow is the NHS meeting so I need to prepare what I;m going to say to them.  I figured I would start out with first explaining that I'm in WISE and my project is about homeless teens.  Then i would go on to explain that part of what I want to do is to volunteer at a shelter and to do some sort of a fundraiser and that is what I would need their help with.  Unfortunately, I haven't decided what exactly how i want to fundraise, but at least I will introduce my project to them and it will go over well.

Setting up a meeting with NHS

Monday, February 28th

Since I've found the organization that I am going to work with, I decided it would be best if I had a school organization help me out.  I'm already apart of NHS so I decided to ask Newman today if he would let me talk to the other members and have them help me out with my project.  He thought it would be a good idea that I do that so he told me I could speak at our next meeting on Wednesday.

Still Visiting

Sunday, February 27th

Yesterday, I had an amazing time at the party and visiting with people.  It made me realize that I am extremely lucky that I have not had any life threatening illness and that life is extremely precious.  Thankfully Ashleigh's fight with breast cancer is over and that others are as lucky as she is.

Tomorrow it is back to school and I need to do some more work on my WISE project.

Visiting Friends

Saturday, February 26th

Today, I woke up early so that my family and I could drive to Virginia to see my mom's best friend.  It is her surprise party since she just finished her last chemo treatment for breast cancer.  Because of my mom's friend and other relatives that have had breast cancer, my original thought for my project was to do something with breast cancer.

Making more progress!

Friday, February 25th

Alright, so today i went home and started calling places on different websites that were for homeless teens.  The first place I called was extremely disappointing because the lady was rude and it seemed like she was bothered by the fact that I called.  This was discouraging, but i decided to try another place called crossroads.  I called them and the lady who answered was so nice and helpful.  She actually seemed pretty enthusiastic that I had called.  I just explained to her that I wanted to help out and so she set up that we were to meet next friday at her office.  I can't wait!

More research!!!!!!

Thursday-February 24th

In class we were in the library again today to work on our research and the annotated bibliography. Today, was basically the same as yesterday and I accomplished a good amount. This time I found a new jersey document about homeless teens. In the document it even has the definition of what homeless actually is in new jersey. Like the other document I need to find time one of these days to sit down and read it all so I can highlight the important parts.

In class research

Wednesday-February 23rd

We began to research more in class today and begin our annotated bibliographies. I was surprised at how much I found today! I found this amazing website that is in my links section of this page. There were a few articles about homelessness as well as another link that shows an amendment. The amendment was all about what the united states needs to do to protect the homeless and other things. One of these days I will sit din and read it all and highlight the important parts of it. This document will probably prig to be quite useful for me.

Annotated bibliographies. . . Ewwww

Tuesday-February 22nd

Today in class we learned about annotated bibliographies. Basically for each site we look at and use we have to write a little summary about it. This does not look like fun :/
We also looked at some examples of the annotated bibliographies. The whole process seems as if it will be a lengthy one. I need to start working on that soon!

MTV?.

Monday- February 21st

Today was a bit more productive than Sunday and Saturday. I actually took the time today to sit dowm and do some research on the computer. While googling new jersey homeless teens I stumbled across MTV. It turns out they had done a segment on the teens that are homeless in new jersey. I watched one of the shows and gained some insight as to what it's like to be a teen with out a home.

Nada

Saturday- February 19th and Sunday 20th

These past two days were completely unproductive. Nothing was accomplished in relation to my WISE project. I thought about doing some research, but then I was like nahhhh, I'll do it later. On Sunday however, I went to Dave and busters with my family. :) So I guess you could say these two days were days I took to relax and recharge.
Hopefully Monday will be more productive.

Tuesday, February 22, 2011

So little time

Friday-February 18th

Okay, so I've come to realize I probably haven't been putting in as much time as I need to lately to jumpstart my project.  I have made minor breakthroughs but nothing major like contacting anyone or anything like that.
This morning, however, Mr. Newman (NHS advisor) came to me and asked me if I wanted to speak at the next NHS meeting which is March 2nd I think.  I told him that I'm not exactly sure what my fundraising activity will be, but he said that's fine.  What I'm going to talk to them about is just the idea of my WISE project and that I'll need their help with it doing the findraising,  Hopefully the fact that they will recieve points will want them to get involved more with it.

New Places

Thursday-February 17th

Earlier today I was searching the web to try and find some teen homeless shelters around burlington county instead of Camden which is where the shelter I found before was located.  Luckily, I came across this good website that is now in my list of links to the right of my entries.  On the website there are basically a list of resources in burlington county for teens in need.  I need to find a couple more websites like this and then narrow down the places that I think will be most helpful.  Then I need to get in contact with some of the people that work there and email them, write letters to them, and call them.  Before I get in contact with them I need to come up with some sort of universal letter to send to all of them.

Second mentor meeting :)

Wednesday-February 16th

Today was my second mentor meeting with Mr. Campbell.  Surprisingly I felt like I got a lot accomplished today in my mentor meeting.  Mr. Campbell helped me set up both a twitter account and this blog.  These tools will probably help me a lot in my journey.  The twitter account will help me because it allows me to follow non-profit organizations and gain information that way.  Also, I can make useful contacts through both the blog and the twitter account.

On the downside, I didn't set aside time today for me to get organized. :/
This will definitely be something I struggle with throughout this process.

Starting to get things done

Tuesday-February 15th

So right now I'm kind of ahead of my aforementioned timeline.  This morning I went and talked to Mr. Newman (NHS advisor).  He said that he would be happy to have the NHS help me with my WISE project.  This brought a big sigh of relief.  Now I know I have a group of people that will help me.  This will help motivate me to keep to my timeline since I will be held accountable for the fundraising part of my project.  There weren't any further accomplishments today reguarding my project.

What to do, What to do

Monday-February 14th

First off, let me say Happy Valentine's Day!!!!

Today I decided to make a little short term time-line of things I need to do so I can overcome my procrastination problem.

Tuesday- I need to get organized (this will be a challenge since nothing in my life is organized)
Wednesday-contact interact or NHS
Friday-begin my research about homeless teens
Tuesday- contact a counselor

I'm getting excited!

Sunday-February 13th

Since my last post was about my concerns, this post will focus on what aspects of my project I'm getting excited about.

Here it goes:

1) Interacting with people
2) Learning more about the community
3) Making a difference in the community
4) Making contacts with outside resources
5) Doing something I'm passionate about
6) Getting others involved
7) Researching and just learning overall
8) Having fun
9) Leaving school early :p
10) and so much more!

Concerns

Saturday-February 12th

These are my current concerns with my project:

1) school regulations and policies will set me back
2) the people I may interact with won't be cooperative
3) time constraints (time-line)
4) privacy issues within the shelter
5) Getting in contact with the shelter
6) The areas where the shelters are located (dangerous and far away)
7) My procrastination (this will be the hardest to overcome)

Project Outline

Friday-February 11th

Hey everyone,
So this entry will just explain my outline if my project.

First, I plan to research about why teen and adolescents are homeless and have to seek out shelters and community resources.  This will include statistics pertaining to these subjects. Another thing I want to focus my research on is fundraising techniques and how to make them succesful.

The 'hands on' part of my project is going to be me interacting with a homeless shelter for teens or some sort of community outlet for the teens.  I want to interview the directors/counselors involved with these programs first.  After i 'get my feet wet' with them I want to look into possibly interviewing the teens there.  Throughout this process I will get an idea of what the shelter needs.  Then I am going to construct some sort of fundraiser or drive within the school and surrounding community.  My plan is going to have one of the school organizations help me with this project.

Until next time,
Emily

First Mentor Meeting!

Thursday-February 10th

Today I had my first mentor meeting with Mr. Campbell.  At first I wasn't quite sure what I was going to talk to him about, but I just started off by briefly explained my broad idea for my project. I'm so excited for my prject and I'm glad Mr. Campbell is my mentor.  I know he will be a valuable asset, especially in the technological aspect.Towards the end of the meeting we had collaborated a list of things I need to do within the next couple of weeks.  (It's already stressing me out! :/  )

Here is the basic list:
1) Create Twitter account
2) Create blog (this)
3) Talk to NHS or Interact advisor (probably NHS)
4) Research homeless teens
5) Research fundraising techniques
6) Talk to guidance counselors
7) set up meeting with principal
8) so much more. . .

Mandatory Journal Entry

Wednesday-February 9th

Well this is a mandatory journal entry for my class.  Basically today we had to interview each other about their WISE projects.  My interview with Danielle was pretty decent and straightforward.  since we are friends already, nothing was awkward.  I learned that she was doing her project on rehabs.  What is kind of ironic is that our projects might overlap since drugs may be a reason for teens becoming homeless.
As for interviews in general, the only nterviews I've ever really done have been within the schools.  However, I am pretty confident talking to adults and I think the interviews probably won't be that big of a deal as long as they aren't rude.  The only thing I might be a bit apprehensive with is interviewing and talking to the teens my own age.  Overall, I hope for the best.
               Talk to you tomorrow,
                                        Emily
